CATEGORY: Daily life

annapurna

It is a sunny day. After raining in the morning, we were able to see very nice Himalayan views. It was a short time before the cloud cover the peaks. We were able to see greenery view, several villages, Mardi Khola River and valley. People around here will start planting rice soon.

millet

In the end of May (Nepali month of Jestha), villagers start planting millet, a crop mainly planted in mountain area. It will be harvested in October and November. Now the planting is almost complete. If you visit this season around here you could see this work done by men and women. The men dig and the women transplant the millet. The women also take care of the young plant, seeded in April. The millet is normally planted together with corn though somewhere people plant the millet only.

dig

The millet can be used to make a famous nepali food “Dindoo”, bread, and traditional liquor “Roxi”. Millet tree is a food for cattle also. It can be preserved for 6 – 7 years. It can be used as a compost with buffalo, goat dungs.
