Nepalese Tea “Chiya”

Chiya

Tea is drunk all over the world. Each country has its own unique way of drinking tea. In Nepal, we call tea as “Chiya”. it is our culture to drink chiya in the morning and day time. We welcome guests with the Chiya also. If you come to Nepal, you will see many Chiya shop.

The Chiya is different from other country’s tea. Let me tell you a recipe of the Chiya.

Chiya Ingredient

First, we boil milk and tea together. Then we add a little water and add some sugar as you like. In country side, we add salt and Ghee also. We can add some herb such as cardamom, ginger, clove, black pepper, cinnamon leaf, etc. In winter, we commonly add ginger and black pepper because they make us warm. We call Chiya with herbs as “Masala Chiya”

Now it is the harvesting season of cardamom and cinnamon. They can be used not only for Chiya but also for foods.
